This didn’t really pop up on our radar, but it popped up on CarbWire’s, which also didn’t really pop up on our radar.

The author of Livin’ La Vida Low Carb has taken issue with Daily Cal writer Alex Mojaher claiming that for his Get Fed column “he had to literally starve himself”. Interesting, for a column about eating. In order to live La Vida appropriately, one must also worship at the altar of deceased Dr. Atkins.

We’re really tired of the rabid non-expert criticizing another non-expert’s advice scenario. Irresponsible bloggers whose biggest concern is carbs obviously need to spend more time reporting on real diets, like the Catkins diet.

We’re not going to use numbers. Nor are we going to use stats to back up any of our claims.

All we’re going to say is 49 years. That’s how long it will take for Cal to get back to the Rose Bowl after “losing to ‘SC tonight”:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/recaps/2006/11/18/35021_recap.html.

After the last seconds ticked off, the Bears were made to be what they are, beasts in the Pac-10, instead of kings of the Pac-10.

We said “last week”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/cal-stunned-by-cats that the team better come prepared tonight. For about a half of football, the Bears looked like they were ready for the upset. But then the Trojans did what they did and they played like the five-time Pac-10 champs.

And Cal did what is also does in the Tedford era – choke under the lights and lose big games. The Bears, for the second-time this year on national T.V., were made to look like Paul Maguire in that ridiculous seat by the sideline camera (not to mention his discussion of the center’s ass, but that’s a story for a whole other day)– stupid.

Last week, we saw Cal lose a perfect Pac-10 season and a shot at the BCS title. This week, we saw the Bears lose the conference crown and a bid to the Rose Bowl.

We’ll see you in San Diego (after the meaningless Big Game).

It’s finally here. It’s make or break time for the Bears. It’s simple for Cal: win and go to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 48 years; lose and languish in San Diego for the second time in three years.

We think that the Bears are going to need a nice little pregame speech, the likes of this one back from 2003, to get them fired up. (Okay, maybe they don’t need that kind of speech to get them hyped, but this speech fires us up.)

We’ve gone through the “special teams”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-special-teams, how “‘SC’s offense”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-scs-offense-v-cals-defense will handle Cal’s defense and how “the Bears’ explosive offense”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-cals-offense-v-scs-defense will try to break through the Trojans defense. Hell, we’ve even gone through the “intangibles”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-intangibles.

Sure USuC hasn’t lost a game in the Coliseum in five years. Sure the Trojan Man has been able to defend Troy to the tune of an 18-0 record in November under the Pete Carroll.

But we, just like ESPN’s Lee Corso, thought this team could beat ‘SC since the beginning of the year and last weekend’s lost to ‘Zona ain’t gonna change that.

If this game was up at Memorial Stadium today, we assure you’d see this seen all over again!

*But even if the game is in Los Angeles, we’re still going to party like it’s 1958!!! Cal over the Trojans 31-27.*

Tomorrow is the big day. It’s ““One for the Roses””:http://www.dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=22329 as the Daily Cal put it today.
We’ve already looked at both squad’s “special teams”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-special-teams, “how the Cal offense looks against ‘SC’s defense”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-cals-offense-v-scs-defense and how “the Trojans look”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-scs-offense-v-cals-defense after the Leinart-Bush-White era.

Today it’s time for intangibles.

We’re asking you, what’s better than having a team of golden grill-wearing football players? Just look at these guys. That grill work is awesome.

But what’s better than awesome grill work is an awesome history, and sadly, USuC has that.

The Trojans are undefeated under coach Pete Carroll. ‘SC hasn’t lost a game in the Coliseum since 2001. And probably the biggest intangible of all…the Bears haven’t won a game in Los Angeles since Tedford took over in 2002.

This includes this choke-job by Cal in 2004. Let’s watch…

It’s sad, but it’s true. In the Coliseum the Trojans are like Russell Crowe in “Gladiator,” and the Bears are like any other pawn thrown his way. If Cal was playing in Strawberry Canyon, maybe it’d be different story.

It seems like the best way to mobilize today’s youth is to create a Facebook group. Witness “I forgot my BruinCard… please don’t TASER me,” a Facebook group created in response to Tuesday’s tasering of a UCLA student in Powell library. With a membership over 2,000 strong, these kids are making a definite statement to UCLA Chancellor Abrams!

Click for a look at Facebook’s taser factions after the jump.

Ingeniously, Facebook groups were designed to accomodate minority voices. This means that if you’re cool with police brutality, you can go ahead and join “Powell Taze: Taze Him Again!” Those of you who take police aggression a wee bit more seriously should join “Powell Taze: Time to Rise Up!” which bills itself as the legitimate online petition group.

So Berkeley, it’s time for you to weigh in: What should UCLA students be doing to protest the incident at Powell? Are Facebook groups indicative of our generation’s apathy, or just a new way of expessing yourself? Send your thoughts to us at “clog@dailycal.org”:mailto:clog@dailycal.org

All of Fantasia may breathe easier now that the Childlike Emperess Sonya Banerjee was saved from removal of office last night, or rather, this morning. Beetle has the long and the short of the details.

We’re thankful this great Nothing is finally DONE. We could only take so many plot twists and mind-boggling revelations that this was happening at our campus.

Tell us who you think played Atreyu at “clog@dailycal.org”:mailto:clog@dailycal.org.

Two days left. That’s how much time that separates us from the huge showdown between Cal and ‘SC in the Coliseum. You can read our previous preview posts “here”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-scs-offense-v-cals-defense and “here”:http://clog.dailycal.org/sports/battle-for-the-roses-preview-special-teams. You can also hit up the “Daily Cal’s breakdown”:http://www.dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=22299.

Let’s look at the Bears offense against Pete Carroll’s defense today.

Carroll is known as a defensive guru. His Trojans have the best defense, in terms of total yards allowed, in the conference. They have the second-best rush defense and the best pass defense. USuC clearly has the advantage when comparing both defenses.

But Cal has no rival on the offensive side of the football. Marshawn Lynch is first in the Pac-10 in all-purpose yards. Nate Longshore has the best passing efficiency.

Like ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit once said, “Cal’s a machine.” And no one’s going to stop them. Not even Carroll’s defense. (Yes, we know ‘Zona stopped them last week, but that was an anomaly, guranteed.)

Just look at how crazy Lynch is. If that visor doesn’t give you chills, then you’re not human either.

*Advantage: Cal.*

Here at UC Berkeley, we have a reputation for being pretty anti-authority. But I think even the most jaded of our commies will be pretty shocked by this video:

According to The Daily Bruin, UCLA student Mostafa Tabatabainejad was hand-cuffed and tasered over four times by UCLA campus police when he failed to produce his student ID in a library computer lab. Wtf?

Click for more instances of “wtf?” after the jump.

Tabatabainejad was stunned by a taser even when he was handcuffed, despite stating to the campus police that he was complying with their demands. Several nearby students attempted to intervene, asking the officers for their ID numbers– to which one cop responded that they’d “get Tased too.”

UCLA UCPD Assistant Chief of Police Jeff Young asserts that the police had no way of knowing whether Tabatabainejad was armed or if he was even a student. If you refer to the video, you can clearly see how suspicious and un-student-like Tabatabainejad looks in his white shirt and blue jeans.

By the end of the video, the police have pretty much got the beginnings of a riot on their hands. We’ve really gotta hand it to those two cops for not being able to peaceably handle such delicate situations as escorting ID-less students out of a computer lab.

UCLA, if you find yourself in need of a copwatch program, you know where to look. Your comrades in Berkeley will be very glad to help.

Student Action, apparantly deciding that their attempt to exact some tiny pyrrhic victory after “the failure of SB 51″:http://dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=22013 was just not farcical enough, is “going to try to get ASUC Executive Vice President Vishal Gupta to preside over the impeachment hearing of Judicial Council Chair Sonya Banerjee”:http://dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=22280.

This is the same Vishal Gupta who, along with Oren Gabriel and the rest of the Student Action executive slate, “filed for a restraining order against the Judicial Council this summer”:http://dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=20895.

This is the same Vishal Gupta who told former ASUC Senator Ben Narodick that, after the Judicial Council issued a ruling against Student Action, he had “lost faith in the internal processes of the ASUC”:http://dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=20879.

This is the same Vishal Gupta who is on record “directly criticizing what he obviously considers the too-broad power of the Council”:http://www.dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=21848: “There should be some kind of provision that does not give the Judicial Council full legislative and judiciary authority.” (For the record, the Council only has the power to review accusations of violations of the ASUC bylaws, which is a far cry from full legislative authority.)

And this is a man inextricably linked with ASUC President Oren Gabriel, who has said the legal fees incurred by the Student Action executive slate (which includes Gupta) are “quite a burden “caused by the Judicial Council’s inability to act within the guidelines of the ASUC constitution, bylaws and their own judicial rules of procedure”:http://dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=21980.”

All of these cases are directly related to the impeachment charges against Banerjee. And yet Gupta is actually claiming he has no personal interest in this case?

Banerjee is being impeached on allegations of procedural violations. In the appeal of the exact case she is being impeached over, Gupta argued that the council had “(issued) “a judgment unprocedurally against Student Action executives”:http://www.dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=20917 in (this) case.”

Oh yeah. He’ll definitely be objective.
