Looks like Cal women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle might be leaving the wonders of a one-and-done basketball program to coach a team that has the potential of reaching the Final Four.

Sources told the Chron that Boyle, a former Duke player and assistant coach, is the top candidate to fill the Blue Devils vacant head coaching position.

While no official statement has been released by Boyle, Cal or Duke, the source said that Boyle may have been in Durham, N.C., to talk with Duke officials this week. She reportedly met with Florida officials Wednesday to talk about their vacant head coaching job.

We don’t know what it is about Cal basketball that makes people want to leave. First Omar Wilkes jets, now it looks like Boyle is going to. And we don’t blame her. If we were in her position, we would have taken the job offer as soon as we got the phone call.

It’s Boyle’s alma mater. She has family in North Carolina. And – this is the selling point – she has a chance to become one of women’s basketball great coaches by inheriting one of women’s basketball’s great teams.

Sure she’s built a solid program here at Cal, but it’s one that’s choked away two appearances in the NCAA tournament. If Boyle returns to the Blue Devils, she has a chance, right away, of winning a NCAA title. We can’t say the same if she stayed on sidelines at Haas Pavilion.
