There must be something in the water here at Cal that lets most coaches stay on with their teams, instead of bolting for greener pastures.

Wednesday, Cal women’s basketball coach Joanne Boyle turned down an offer to coach at her alma matter, Duke, and stay with the Bears until 2014.

That’s pretty huge, especially since Boyle was the Blue Devils top choice.

What could have made her stay with Cal? No one knows except for Boyle, (and maybe her dog, if she has a dog).

Like we said earlier in the week, we thought she was good as gone. If we were her, there was no way we’d turn down Duke, a chance to coach for a national championship next year or Coach K.

Sure, maybe someday Boyle will have the Bears just as good as the North Carolina’s, the UConn’s and the Tennessee’s of women’s basketball. (Okay, maybe not Tennessee). But to us it’s still pretty odd to see Boyle back at Haas Pavilion. She would have been an automatic contender next year if she signed with the Blue Devils. Instead, she’s going to have to continue to build at Cal.

On a side note, this is huge for athletic director Sandy Barbour, who staved off two possible coaching defections this year. First, and more importantly, keeping Jeff Tedford around was huge. Now Boyle’s still around. Looks like Barbour knows what she’s doing.
