So, after all the build up, victory came easily. We don’t know how to feel exactly. Hyping this game for longer than someone studies abroad was fun in some sort of sick way. Now, it’s over. We had nothing to be nervous about, and now we have nothing to do.Eh, it’s still good to have football back. And it’s great to defeat the hated neon orange people. Here are some very, very profound thoughts on Saturday’s action:
  • We WON!!! Yayyyyy!!!! Woo!!
  • The DeSean Jackson punt return was unreal. He’s a better PR man than Reggie Bush was in college.
  • Can he do the kickoffs too? That could be cool.
  • The obligatory “Berkeley is CRAZY” coverage is always galling. It’s not that we hate RunningWolf interviews or Oaks reporting in general (in fact, the war over the Oaks never ceases to enthrall us). We’re just sick of getting stereotyped as Flower Child U. Um, why couldn’t the media focus on all the Berkeley hippies, eccentrics and street preachers who weren’t living in trees?
  • Part of the Berkeleotyping effort was the insane focus on Nate Longshore’s new look (obvious crack: Uh, you mean he looks like a great quarterback who won’t fold under pressure?). ABC just had to seize on Nate’s turning into Shaggy from Scooby Doo and talk about the QB’s Berkeleyification for centuries.
  • Justin Forsett was great, but he’s no Marshawn Lynch. The lack of a big, griding back will hurt us eventually.
  • But our defense will hurt us more. Jeez, they were awful. That awesome forced fumble was deceptive. Were there really 11 guys out there on Saturday? It felt like five at most. And all five were named Syd’Quan Thompson.
  • Jahvid Best is too fast for description. We tried to come up with a way to talk about him but just ended up sounding football announcerish (That guy can really, really, run the ball!).
  • See ya next week.

What about the hijacking of my, wait i mean OUR, football game for those Cal fans in the stands!!?? Throughout 60 minutes of football the PA system was overtaken by someone (anyone?) yelling into a microphone ordering and pleading us to raise our hands and make noise, followed by effusive thank-yous.. it has to be unprecedented and it went off like a workshop on how to be a proper fan, which makes everyone in blue and gold not on the field look like novices when it comes to big time football..like many fans I read and heard Coach Tedford before the game ask for a loud stadium, so i did my part. Most offensive, however, most cringeworthy in my opinion, was the mic holder’s announcement after a number of big plays: “That was all You[the loud Cal supporters]!”. No, the players and coaches deserve 100% of the credit for the excellent performance on the field. Everyone else was a spectator, and one ill informed spectator was given a microphone and commentary that i could not tune out.

As an huge Tennessee fan, Congrats to the Cal football team on a game well played and coached. BOO!!! to the fans that were chanting while the Tennessee football player was laying motionless on the field. You should be banned from college football games for your disrespect for the players and the game itself. Remember your actions if your star player goes down this year!!!

The chants were aimed at the departing fans, and most of the crowd hushed once the injury was regarded as serious. Some of those chants lasted way too long though.

actually, ‘howie’, the annoying guy with the mic was an official Cal Mic-Man. you’ll notice that after the 1st 5 minutes, only the student section could hear his mic, which is customary for all home games. i think he was patched into the stadium feed for the first 5 minutes of the game only because the pac-10 would not allow Cal to hand out 50,000 megaphones to fans, and they wanted to make sure everyone was fully involved.

    to justin:
i take offense at the suggestion that Cal fans were intentionally rude to the injured tennessee player. most of the chants were coming from the Blue Zone, which was at the opposite end of the stadium from where the hurt player was. having been there, i can say that most of us (including the hundreds of VOLS fans streaming out of the stadium while their own player lay motionless on the field) initially thought it was a tv time out, not an injured player. so let’s not point fingers.

That s nothing Justin, you should hear what the Cal student section says when BYU comes to town or at basketball games. Then again, I hear Cal’s starting to figure a few things out so maybe they are nicer now than when I was an undergrad.

Um but yeah, Cal fans? Intentionally nasty and rude? Well hopefully that has already gone the way of the buffalo
