So guess what? There’s a new vice chancellor for equity and inclusion on campus! We didn’t even know what that meant until the VC E&I sent all Berkeley students an e-mail Monday telling them that he was here.
Gibor Basri is the university’s first vice chancellor for equity and inclusion. And we assume we can call him “The Big VC E&I” because the Web page for said position refers to, we quote, the VC E&I Office. So we jump at the opportunity.
We suppose he’s been here since the beginning of the semester, only he’s waited until the most opportune time (right in the heart of midterm season, when we are least busy) to tell us.
We don’t know entirely what he does other than righteously upholding “Equity and Inclusion.” Fortunately, he elaborated for students in his e-mail. Unfortunately, all we still know is that he righteously upholds “Equity and Inclusion”:
bq. The responsibilities of my position are daunting, but exciting:
# I need to be familiar with all the campus efforts that relate to equity, inclusion, and diversity, and help bring forward new ones;
# I need to understand the relevant issues for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff;
# I need to examine the relationship of our campus and programs to the UC system and its alumni, as well as educational institutions at all levels in the state and higher education across the country;
# I need to understand and affect how we allocate our resources, and develop strategies to augment them with outside help.
According to the UC Regents, the position was created because of a recent report finding that a “change was needed” in regards to the diversity of the campus. Who would dare dream what that problem might be? (We’ll stop being facetious, and you won’t have to wonder; you can peruse the Daily Cal’s annotated account.)
The Big VC E&I and his crew have also created what he calls in the e-mail a “general diversity website.” It’s, well, general, and, um, diverse. Let’s see if such idiosyncratic terms can conquer its rather trite address: diversity.berkeley.edu
