The Clog anticipates that most of you will be getting piss drunk this weekend at Fort Mason’s Oktoberfest celebrations, but we have a few reasons why you may want to pass on the Spaten-induced debauchery and stick around.
First of all, there’s that football game, which we will probably win–along with the accompanying 1868 Homecoming Fair gracing Sproul Plaza all weekend. And don’t get us wrong. We are all for beer, bratwurst and Bavarian attire–but it’s pish posh compared to the free food that may abound in North Shattuck’s Gourmet Ghetto this Sunday! From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Berkeley Spice of Life Festival will be serving up some cooking demos straight from the chefs at our city’s finest eateries.
We’re hoping it’s just a bourgeoisie version of the Berkeley International Food Festival in June, where this clogger walked onto the stage after a demo to help herself to some deliciously free quesadillas from Kitchen on Fire. Except this time, it would be deliciously free food from Kitchen on Fire and restaurants like La Note and Bistro Liaison.
For all filmmakers and cinema fans: Also on Sunday, actor Sung Kang and producer Evan Leong will screen a documentary in 145 Dwinelle. Apparently, the film is about how prominent Asian-American director Justin Lin makes his movies so awesome.
Both Kang and Leong have been involved in groundbreaking Justin Lin-directed cult classics like “Better Luck Tomorrow,” as well as the newly released feature, “Finishing the Game,” which is a comedic look at Asian representation (or lack thereof) in the media. The event begins at 4 p.m. and is kindly hosted by the most represented student organization on campus–the Asian American Association, in cooperation with Asian Pacific American Student Development. A Q&A session will take place afterwards.
And you thought you were going to study this weekend.
