The ASUC will host a gala banquet on Oct. 27 to honor its 120th anniversary of exemplary student government. (Yes, we added that exemplary in there.) Past ASUC presidents (one from each decade, starting with the ’50s) will speak at the event.
Currently, the ASUC is trying to subsidize the cost of the tickets to encourage more students to come. There are two different bills right now, one that’ll lower some ticket prices to $50 and one that’ll lower some ticket prices to $90, both under different conditions. Either way, we’d still rather spend our Saturday before Halloween dressed in overpriced costumes and barfing up a cauldron of jungle juice.
The budget is roughly $100,000 for this event, some of which goes to catering, decorating, technology and invitations. One thousand invitations were sent out, and the ASUC expects about 350 to 400 guests, 100 of whom are expected to be students. So that’s basically all of ASUC, right? Who else would want to go?
Oh, and BTW, the event is also somehow evidently of course linked to the eternal issue of Lower Sproul:
(Vishal) Gupta also added that the event is being viewed as a fundraising opportunity for Lower Sproul Plaza redevelopment and the overall ASUC endowment. He said he hopes the event will raise between $2 and $5 million.
The gala seems geared toward alumni, so it does make sense to charge as much as you can get away with (kind of like Urban Outfitters, only without the hipster clothes). But is this money actually going toward Lower Sproul–is this the plan? Or is it just the case that, hey, why not just tack on “Lower Sproul” and “money” and everything will be solved?
