Alright, so we have a secret crush on SUPERB, even though its comedy events usually take place right smack in the middle of the week–an obvious sabotage to Cloggers who want to do well on our super important midterms. Nevertheless, fate still tends to bring us together. Fate, or hardcore procrastination. We tend to mix up the two.

Tonight, SUPERB productions brought some professional improv to the campus community: the touring company for the Upright Citizens Brigade. A comedy troupe famous for spawning a few new-school “Saturday Night Live” performers, the night’s show consisted of the actors calling up a volunteer from the audience and creating completely improvised sketches based on the student’s life.

There were two female volunteers. Cute, wholesome undergrads who both happen to work at KALX, engage in completely non-sinful activities and love tea parties. All in all, pretty solid proof that Berkeley is no longer hippies, drugs and free love. Take that, Bobby Roth!

In terms of humor potential, both girls were practically the same in their innocent nature, a similarity that made for some repetitive laughs. We eventually grew quite weary of the countless “when she breaks a bone, a rainbow comes out!” jokes that poked fun at their seeming perfection. Additionally, the girls had very Berkeley majors–Earth and planetary science, and peace and conflict studies. Clever global warming and war jokes naturally ensued. At one point, the actors expressed intimidation at how “smart” of a group we were– perhaps because any major with an “and” in it sounds smarter. The Clog’s 2.8 GPA was flattered.

We have to give props to the awesome actors. To put it into an analogy: Life gave them lemons, but they went ahead and made a sweet lemon poppyseed cake with buttercream icing. Without a recipe. Though the audience ate it, and laughed heartily, we couldn’t help but feel a bit unsatisfied. It’s not the actors’ faults. We suppose it’s much more fun to make fun of people with actual problems than to make fun of people whose biggest recent annoyance in life is spilled chocolate milk.

Perhaps we should have volunteered the tree people.
