Friday was chock-full of energetic political festivities intent on hyping us up for Tuesday–from the noon Obama rally, to the evening’s much-anticipated Activism Right There extravaganza. The latter was a free, politically-charged arts event that took the bougie out of Zellerbach Hall, if only for a night. It attracted up to 2,000 students and activists who literally stampeded into the auditorium come 7 p.m. Apparently, the Zellerbach suits were a tiny bit flustered by the crowd, considering we saw one of them frantically yell, “STOP PUSHING!”
But it was all good. People eventually got to their seats, where they were met by the sounds of DJ Phatrick and host Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Then commenced a night filled with a high-profile activist panel, slam poetry, messages from Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Mumia Abu-Jamal, musical performers and dancing in the aisles. We’re pretty sure you don’t see this type of audience energy at Zellerbach’s Yo-Yo Ma concerts.

Why would anyone enjoy listening to a convicted cop-murderer? Is this what activism means? Does the ASUC sponsor this?
