When you think of a typical Valentine’s Day, a few things come to mind: hearts, chocolates, cute, pint-sized animals and … video conferencing?
This Thursday at the Cafe Muse, the Berkeley Center for New Media and the Berkeley Art Museum invite you to share a romantic lunch with a loved one via a video conference-enabled laptop. For a paltry price of $16, food (Chinese chicken salad!) and drink (soda and juice!) is provided. The video date requires a laptop, a webcam, video-conferencing software, and (oh, right) a warm, breathing human date. With all the gizmo gadgetry involved, we almost forgot about that last one.
For singles, utilize the convenient computer stations that are set up for your pleasure. Said computer stations operate as the singles bar at the event, according to the event website. The site also invites singles to “come alone and empty-handed for all the fun of digital and analog flirting.” Sound fun? Yeah!
The self-admitted social experiment takes place in Cafe Muse, which is located in the Berkeley Art Museum on 2621 Durant Avenue. Abolish all thoughts of a mistily romantic late-night fling facilitated by that fifteen-inch hunk of metal you call God, though: the event runs from 3:30 to 4:15 in the afternoon, then takes a break before returning for a second go from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.
Well, it’s possible that your other half may experience it as a mistily romantic late-night fling. That is, if your other half’s living in Kamchatka, Russia.
