If you’re a freshman this year, whether you remember it or not, you received a book in the mail over the summer. You were instructed to read the book so you’d have something in common with all the other freshman, and you could bond over the shared experience when you finished telling each other your name, major, and residence.
You even had the opportunity to partake in some enlightened discussion about what you learned in specially tailored seminars. The culmination of the program known as “On the Same Page” came when the author of the book, Gary Willis, came to speak at Zellerbach Hall. And there was much rejoicing.
The book was “Lincoln at Gettysburg,” and if you’re like us, it’s sitting on your shelf, untouched and collecting dust with all your other textbooks, because you brought it with you to the dorms on the off-chance you were somehow going to be graded on it. Luckily, you weren’t, because you didn’t read it. (No offense, Gary Willis.)
Well, after that whole bit, we were just tickled when we found out what next year’s freshmen are getting in the mail. We thought perhaps they would receive a nice tome about the German economy post-World War I, or maybe, a handy volume about the mating practices of fruit flies. But no. Those little snots get free DVDs. Not just any DVDs–Academy Award-Winning DVDs, of the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” variety.
They also get one of Ang Lee’s other movies, “Ice Storm.” On top of all that, sometime next year the dude himself will be coming to Cal, hopefully to talk in excruciating detail about being at the helm of a love scene between none other than Heath Ledger (R.I.P.) and Jake Gyllenhaal. Yeah, it’s that Ang Lee. Seriously, why even call it “On the Same Page?” More like, “Suck Up to the Famous Director So He’ll Speak Here.” And yes, Captain Obvious, we’re bitter. And we’ll continue to be bitter–that is, unless we get to see Ang Lee, too.
