Hundreds of students gathered on Upper Sproul this afternoon in commemoration of Chris Wootton, the graduating senior who was stabbed to death in a drunken altercation last Satuday. Wootton’s brothers from the Sigma Pi fraternity spoke in memory of Wootton. As one, they shouted, “Rock on, Wootton!” at the speech’s end.
Wootton’s girlfriend, Brandy DeOrnellas, also spoke. In a breaking voice, DeOrnellas stressed Wootton’s commitment to religion and love, as well the futility and wastefulness of fighting the people you love.
Prosecutors filed charges today against Andrew Hoeft-Edenfield, the 20 year old who confessed to the crime. A Berkeley City College student who worked at the Jamba Juice on Shattuck Avenue, Hoeft-Edenfield is due back in court on Thursday.
The Los Angeles Times has an illuminating take on the situation here.

“an illuminating take”? Hardly.
That article tries to turn this incident example of some sort of class conflict in Alameda county. This ignores the enormous economic diversity of students who attend UC Berkeley and paints us as antagonistic toward those who don’t live in “the hills.” I find it very hard to believe a majority of Cal students feel this antagonism.

their analysis doesnt take aawy from other analyses.
it’s looking at it from a social perspective instead of some other level of explanation.

I agree with Berkelium97.
I spent half my childhood in a neighborhood where the pimps and hoes were literally right across the street (my favorite was the white woman, because she was going to have a baby). I go to berkeley and I live in a decent apartment because i worked for it. Bringing up class conflict as a major factor that indirectly help lead to the stabbing is clearly an excuse by who ever was writing that article to avoid the technicalities of the situation. Aka, people who carry violent weapons around with them (why not pepper spray?), that it was USED, etc.
Of course, IMO both parties (as in both groups) involved are guilty of aggressive acts during the time of the stabbing.
I’m not much of a supporter of the frat/sorority lifestyle, but people really need to stop harrassing them if they’re not hurting anyone/hurting their members. Sure, they do get annoying sometimes, but it’s not like they go around town defacing property and intimidating others. They don’t ASK for strangers to knock on their doors asking for an invite into their homes/parties. Just because berkeley is a public college doesn’t mean it’s homes/students/student-activites-close-to-home should be easily accessible as well.

If you knew wootton, then you disrespectful pieces of crap would know, he was a good damn guy. He believed in God so much it freakin leaked out of him. We got into it a couple years back, which was all my fault, and he naturally forgave me, something i didnt deserve. BAN FRATS, get a life, he was at HIS GIRLFRIENDS SORORITY hanging out. Why not carry pepper spray? NO ****. why do people make such crazy comments on such a serious subject, like the poor vs berkeley lines and stuff. They need to focus on puttin a fence around berkeley because the white trash surrounding it is terrible (and yes im white so shut up). Its terrible, bums and all. Its like, no mr bum I DONT HAVE ANY CHANGE, the bums before YOU TOOK IT. This had nothing to do with frat crap, it had to do with an innocent persons life being taken for no reason. Im happy they caught that piece of crap trash kid, suffer in jail for the rest of your life for stabbing my cousin’s roomie and old friend of mine. STOP MAKING RETARDED COMMENTS

What does believing in God have to do with anything? If you believe in God you’re irrational at best. I love how you just cited that to make him sound like a good person. Note**** this does not mean I’m saying he’s a bad person. I just love pointing out people’s retardedness when it comes to God.

I think this speaks for itself.
We don’t need to ban frats. We need to ban bigots and idiots.

Asside from each media source adding its own little bias to this story the original fact remains. This guy stabbed someone fataly. He should be punished. Fraternities aren’t discriminating who comes to there parties by race or predjiduce, they discriminate based on membership. These are orginizations that are hundreds of years old which teach brotherhood and excellence in both college and daily life. Drinking and throwing parties is just a part of normal college life. Just so happens that when you stick 30 like minded individuals into a house, they party together and don’t want random people to come in so that things like stabbings by misguided youths don’t take place.

it’s not just city college students frat’s “rebuff,” it’s any member of the student body that they don’t like or have something against. i’ve seen frats turn away plenty of people for not being cool enough, not having enough girls hanging out them or having too many girls hanging on them. the amount of homophobic, racist and generally snobish things i’ve heard from that community have taught me a lesson hoeft-edenfield must not have learned, stay away from frats.
