If all is right in the world, your finals are over, seniors are in the process of wrapping up their respective commencement ceremonies–and now, it’s on with the graduation parties and obligatory Memorial Day weekend barbecues (that is, if you don’t mind grilling in scattered showers).
Welcome to summertime in the bay!
If you’re still here, waiting patiently for Session A to lay its hands on you, don’t waste this small taste of freedom by lounging in your PJ’s. But if you’re not one for grilling in the rain or playing a part in the Memorial Day weekend box office game, here are a few things you can do to make your weekend less mundane.
- Rain or shine, Carnaval San Francisco 2008 will stop traffic on Harrison Street this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with an annual parade–the biggest multicultural celebration in San Francisco. The parade is part of a weekend-long Latin American and Caribbean festival themed “Many Cultures — One Spirit” and should be a colorful spectacle of traditional eats, loud beats and dancers clad in glittery feathers.
- The weather will be perfect for The Chron’s list of somber Bay Area Memorial Day services for vets. There’s one on the famed and allegedly haunted USS Hornet aircraft carrier in Alameda on Monday at 1 p.m., and also has a flight simulator.
- If you’re into film noir, historian and critic Eddie Muller is talking to the Cerrito Speakeasy’s “Will the Thrill” this Saturday and Sunday in our lovely neighbor town of El Cerrito.
- Talk about unconventional Memorial Day weekend fare–SFist has word of a Masturbate-a-thon that happens this weekend to raise money for Mission Street’s Center for Sex and Culture. We’re not sure how the fundraising works–is it kind of like a Spell-a-thon where you get your friends and relatives to sponsor you?
- Fashionistas and fashionista wannabes–this Sunday’s your chance at developing a truly unique wardrobe during the Hayes Valley Capsule Design festival. We have a feeling there definitely won’t be a shortage of very cute independent designer vendors, so make sure your bank account (and sense of style) is in tip top shape.
