Arnie Signs Bill to Ban Text Messaging for Drivers

We happily welcome another law that shows our society’s need for common sense. The new measure to forbid drivers from this cell phone use will come into play Jan. 1, 2009. It will be $20 for a first offense and $50 each time after that — chump change, we’re sure, compared to your text messaging bill.

In our time, we’ve seen drivers make use of their morning commute by eating breakfast, reading the paper with it eagle-spread over the steering wheel, or even brushing their teeth in a Styrofoam cup. Maybe we need more rules around here?

We’ll see what the Governator comes up with next — he’s on day two of seven for bill-signing and he’s only got 870 more bills to go. No distractions, please! As procedure has it, anything that he doesn’t get to automatically becomes a law.
