During the cold, dark, dreary season of midterms and million-page papers, our health oftentimes gets thrown in the back burner. It’s not until we’re dripping snot onto a last-minute problem set that we realize we should have taken the precautions to avoid a cold during this stressful time of semester. Take heed, friend! It’s neither too late nor too difficult to have a healthy test season.

*Flush with Fluids, then Flush the Toilet. Detox your body of unfriendly germs from the get-go. Fill a large canteen of water every night before going to bed to make for an easy grab-and-go on your way to class the next morning. While at school, be sure to refill several times–when the time comes to empty your own can, the lighter the color your urine, the better. If you find yourself drinking a lot of coffee, remember to match a cup of coffee with a glass of water to keep hydrated.

*Resist the Urge–Don’t Touch Yourself. Specifically, avoid excessively rubbing your eyes, nose and mouth. Trust no one! The hottie studying in the seat across from you may be a hot viral host of doom.

*Get an ‘A’ on Your Paper with Some ‘C’ in Your Diet. Vitamin-C, that is. We’re not talking anything fancy–take home an orange or grapefruit from Crossroads, do a couple shots of OJ at breakfast, or snack on some tablets of vitamins while memorizing tables o’chem structures. If you’re not sick, you’ll stave off that flu for another day, and if you are sick, you’ll provide your little armies of white blood cells with proper ammo.

*To the more belligerent combatant of the Cold: Disinfect. A swift wipe-down of communal objects at home and at school (doorknobs, faucets, the T.V. remote, computer keyboards) with disinfectant wipes will help you sleep better at night–and we do mean worry-free and germ-free.

*Join the Flu Tang Clan. The Tang Center offers cheap flu shots on scheduled days throughout the semester. Protect yourself. Protect your prof. Protect your roomie.

*You’ve Realized it’s Too Late to Follow All the Above Precautions. Ok, fine. In which case, we recommend chicken soup for the soul, salt water for the sore throat, and an extra hour of sleep to allow your immune system to recuperate for another day of battle.
