Apparently, the ASUC’s last two meetings were in violation of their bylaws, so all business conducted since the eighth week of this semester’s session has been, well, illegal.

Before your untainted faith in our student government wavers, you should know why the ASUC was able to conduct its last few marathon meetings without the luxury of legality.

“They just kind of forgot about it,” said ASUC Attorney General Michael Sinanian. Welp, it happens to the best of us.

But the kicker is how the ASUC is getting itself out of this mess: suspend the bylaws, of course.

Except wait: If all the ASUC’s recent business has been in violation of the bylaws, which entails said business has been illegal, then wouldn’t voting to suspend the bylaws be itself illegal? Unless the bylaws allow for their suspension in case the ASUC has been operating in violation of them, in which case what the hell is the point of declaring such business illegal?

Maybe we’re missing something huge, but the moral of the story remains: Never forget!

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Clog heard that a certain ASUC Senator John “The Mog” Moghtader might sing “I Can Be Your Hero Baby” at this Wednesday’s session. Inside joke or thinly veiled attempt to increase ASUC visibility? Tune in on Wednesday to find out!

Yeah, it sort of would. They haven’t technically voted to suspend the by-laws yet, if Sinanian is to believed, though he may be incorrect. But don’t worry. I’ll be sure to generate an answer.

With all this talk about making the ASUC more efficient and just ‘getting down to business,’ it’s amazing how people still find the time to bog the ASUC down with more complicated legalities and other nuances. Just let them get the job done.
