While the vast majority of you were indisputably waking up at 2 p.m. earlier this week, the Clog forced ourselves to wake up early enough to work—that is, eat breakfast at Bette’s Oceanview Diner. Because we are* a food blog. Oh, the humanity!
So our first impression was the crowd: Not a whole lot of pre-baby booming types. Signs of the economic impact on eateries? Apparently the place used to be full of the young and rowdy type. You know, back in the day (LIKE THE 1990′S).
Second came the giant cherry pie slice, complete with tapioca filling that hangs from the ceiling. Classy! Not to mention the jukeboxes that apparently work, though we didn’t try them out. There was definitely a feeling of dineriness—or at least our Generation Y conception of diners—with a curvy art deco style characterizing the insides.
Our impression of the menu was a good selection of scrambles, towards which we’re somewhat affectionate. Naturally, then, we ordered the special scramble … something about salami … and weren’t disappointed.
The diner is supposedly known for its pancake/scone recipes, and obligingly decided to “share the wealth” by offering signed pancake cookbooks at the front counter. Wait, a phrase vaguely resembling a stretch of a bad interpretation of socialist principles actually being rooted in fairly simple and sound capitalist ideas? We’ve read this chapter before.
Location: 1807A 4th St.
Price: Around $10 or less.
Notes: A little out of the way for the college crowd, but great for a weekend brunch.
