Contrary to expectations, the English department here on the Berkeley campus doesn’t just sit around in a perpetual state of steeple-fingered contemplation, sipping steaming chamomile tea and navel-gazing about literary dead white men all day long. The department will launch a new series of campus programs called “Conversations with Distinguished Alumni” this Dec. 1, with none other than the biggest of all bigwigs–short of Rupert Murdoch–showing up to bat: Peter Chernin.
Who? you ask, squinting in confusion. Aspiring reporters and future magazine editors will be thrilled to discover–indeed, should already know–that Chernin is President and Chief Operating Officer of News Corporation. News Corp., as it’s known by industry insiders, is the world’s largest media conglomerate. It owns the Wall Street Journal, 20th Century Fox (as in the film studio) and HarperCollins (as in the publishing house). He’s also the chairman and CEO of Fox Entertainment Group.
Prior to his meteoric rise to prominence, Chernin earned his B.A. in English literature from Berkeley in 1974. His appearance is scheduled for the Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler Hall, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 1.
