Observe, from the slight depths of Lower Sproul Plaza, the dim interior of a food court, the Cal1 Card Office’s flashy facade, The Bear’s Lair’s patio and a scattering of homeless people sprawled on benches, eyeing your frozen yogurt. Believe it or not, the student body seems to feel that this eye-catching locale could use some work. The results of a recent ASUC survey prod UC Berkeley a little closer toward implementing a multi-million dollar revamping. And no, delicious Asian fast food chains don’t seem to be what they have in mind.
The survey, which was conducted by the ASUC and Graduate Assembly, determined that students overwhelmingly feel the Lower Sproul Redevelopment Plan, which has been in the cards for about a decade, to be “somewhat” or “very” important. The roughly $100 million plan would entail a new and improved student center, the introduction of more restaurants, and an overall more “vibrant” student space. The Clog, from our Eshelmann Hall vantage point, sincerely hopes this entails an aesthetic adjustment. If all goes according to plan, the project will be underway by 2012.

If someone finds that the giant increase in student fees is really important, in the sense of being bad, does that count as “important” in that question? How would students respond to the fee increase question if they realized the increase was from $6 to something in the triple digits? What was the response rate? How many people didn’t feel it was important enough to fill out a survey over? Shouldn’t the Daily Cal be asking these questions?

Revamping Lower Sproul for future generations is like fucking for virginity.
How? I don’t know, but just like the High Performance Center it’s just another amenity I won’t really be able to utilize.

gah, by the time sproul is renovated, 48 generations of my future progeny will have passed. i will never see its completion and feast on the carbohydrate-rich delicacies of its renovated food courts.
