If you wanna be Lawrence Berkeley Lab’s new director, it looks like all you’ve got to do is get with Mark Yudof’s friends–all 11 of them. OK, so Mark Yudof might actually have more than 11 friends (according to Twitter, he has 142), but 11 is the number of dudes on the search committee for the lab’s new director. We wish we could report that it has an awesome name, like “Team Awesome” or “The Seekers” or “The Gatekeepers of the Torrent of Shame” or something, but as far as we can tell, they’re just calling it “an 11-member committee.”

But don’t let the lack of epic name fool you. Believe us when we say that whoever they choose will step into some borderline clown-sized shoes. He or she will be filling the position vacated by Berkeley’s own White House Ambassador of Badass-ador, the environmental rock star himself,  Steven Chu.

The committee is comprised of a bunch of UC science high-ups, along with one guy from Stanfurd. (We can only assume that he is a spy.) They’re right on schedule to pick someone as soon as December … only 11 months after Chu left the lab. Here’s to hoping this doesn’t become a J-school situation, know what we mean?
