Oh, harsh realities of budget cuts! First you went for our classes, then our student fees and now, our time-honored final season all-night Anoncon … er, we mean study sessions.

You heard right, the UC Regents voted Chancellor Birgeneau announced last week at the UC Regents meeting to that the 24-hour study halls in university campus libraries during finals will end due to budget cuts. This in addition to the usual, cutting student jobs, GSIs and, now, instating furloughs for UC employees.

So, consider this your fair warning—so you can spend the next semester trying to scout out a suitable location for late night studying during the next set of finals. That is, assuming that your dorm, apartment or other residence location has already been deemed inappropriate for such pursuits.

Also, if you put off checking out books until 4 a.m. the day before that paper is due again … the Main Stacks can no longer save you. (Note: post edited for accuracy)

According to the Cal news center the Chancellor said that libraries won’t be open on Saturdays either. I think it’s ridiculous that on our supposedly academically-focused campus, students who want to study don’t have a place to do so on our campus.

Ricardo,

Most libraries will not be open Saturdays, but Moffitt and the main stacks will remain open.

Seriously? REALLY? REAAAAAALLLLLYYYY? My point isn’t that I physically can’t do that. Every midterm and final season I walk into Doe or Moffit and spend a half hour looking for a spot to study only to find none. I know I’m not the only one with this problem. When I’m one of the lucky ones with a seat I like to watch the unfortunate people who walk in hoping to study only to be crushed. I don’t think this should happen at a top university. But who knows, maybe this is common among our peer institutions (I doubt it).

I actually have never studied at a cafe other than FSM for finals or midterms but I do know that during those times dorm study rooms = filled, FSM = filled, and libraries = filled. If off-campus cafes aren’t filled too, there’s a reason and its that people don’t want to be there. Strada and Milano aren’t libraries, they’re not quiet and they don’t have hella books that students usually need when writing a midterm or final paper. Also, I can’t go to Strada or Milano after 2am.

I personally find an open room in VLSB or Dwinelle and just stay there for hours. Especially since Dwinelle is open until at least 12am, 7 days a week.

Dwinelle – for the truly hardcore. (Unless you need research books, in which I can’t help you).
