Forgive us while we tear your gazes away from the walk-out coverage for one teensy weensy second. It seemed prudent to update you on the status of our three UC Berkeley alums who are still in Iranian custody.
Unfortunately, the news is that there actually isn’t news—or if there is, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s lips are apparently sealed. Wait, what’s that? The president of Iran being uncooperative?! Consider our minds comprehensively blown.
Ahmadinejad stated last Friday that a prisoner exchange could potentially be arranged in order to guarantee the trio’s release. And, on Tuesday night, he went on to say that he “would request leniency for the hikers and that the case be expedited.”
But in a speech delivered before the U.N. general assembly the following day, the Iranian prez made no further mention of the hikers, and instead reverted to his usual diplomatic revue (the U.S. sucks, down with Westernization, blarghity shmarghity … you know how it goes).
Though Ahmadinejad is clearly doing his best to milk the whole fandango bone-dry, we’re assuming—or perhaps just hoping—he’ll eventually get bored and send the hikers home. Keep your fingers crossed.
