Protests on campus are far from over.

This time it’s Compass, the Committee for Philippine Studies. The group believes that it’s time for UC Berkeley to establish Philippine Studies classes in addition to securing their Tagalog classes in the mind-bending chaos that is rearranging the curriculum to fit around budget deficits.

The club wants the university to hire a Philippine Studies professor and then perhaps establish a department of Philippine Studies on campus. Ideally, the club says, this will lead to Philippine Studies departments at other UCs as well. About 800 Compass members protested the walkout, “even performing a traditional Filipino tinikling dance on the campus’ famed Sproul Plaza.”

The group is still actively pursuing this goal. To put it bluntly, they want what they want and they’ll get it somehow. We only hope Yudof understands that.
