2459294638_d6845a1180 There’s little a college student loves more than illegally downloading music. It makes you seem trendy, rebellious, and anti-authority (or at least that’s what the hipsters think to themselves as they stroke their goatees, cackling as the Fleet Foxes download onto their Mac).

But the music industry is hoping those days are over. Enter Mog, the newest music blog which allows users to access unlimited “high-fidelity” tunes for $5 a month. The four major record labels will be represented, in addition to smaller independent labels.

The drawbacks? It costs about the same as Napster, which is $15 for three months. You can’t download any of the music onto any device other than your computer. An app for the I-phone or Blackberry should appear later this year, but the use of that application will be $12 to $15.

For the love of Mog! What makes this site any better than the others? The clearest answer seems to be “the quality of the audio, which will stream at 256 kilobits per second” (double the speed of its competitors), which “basically means that, as long as you have a good Internet connection, tracks should sound better through Mog.”

If you’re concerned by the uncertainty of that declaration, you shouldn’t be. Mog could possibly be close to the best of some of the music sites out there today. That’s all you need to know.

for 95% of the population 256 is great. people nowadays stream music on youtube for crying out loud. definitely way better than 128. also 256 does not refer to “speed.”
