It’s almost time to pack up and leave for your holiday break, but before you go, check your UC stocking because you got a present: a holiday letter [1] to faculty and staff from UC President Mark Yudof. Break out the eggnog.

As bloggers, we are expected to muster up a certain amount of scorn for letters such as these, but it is such a bland letter that it’s difficult to get angry about. Yudof discusses plans for the new year, including asking for more moolah from Sac-town. He also insists that we need “to help Californians understand that UC is their university.” (Although we think that idea has been pretty well-established ’round these parts.)

The letter is also full of euphemisms like “we have weathered a particularly difficult year.” The discerning reader could add several “DUHs” to statements like that.

But in point of fact, most of the stuff he says is true. His message still holds water for all the people of UC. “I hope you never forget that your contributions make this the greatest public university system in the world. You are part of an enterprise that furthers and betters the lives of many,” he writes.

Whether he truly understands his own words or not, it’s a good sentiment. But it brings up a question–some might say, the ultimate question. Yudof: naughty or nice?

Uh, can we get back to you on that? We have to check the list twice.
