Possessing as we do a bit of a sweet tooth, the Clog headed over to Cinnaholic about a week ago to see what they had to offer. What we found was a large assortment of cinnamon rolls, including special flavors (pumpkin spice, mocha almond and peanut butter & jelly, to name a few) and lots of toppings to choose from if you’d prefer to design your own or just go plain.
The storefront is one of many (see also Saturn Cafe, Ironwood BBQ) that just opened on Oxford Street near Center Street, across from the west edge of campus. Cinnaholic takes up relatively little square footage, as it and Ironwood BBQ share the space once held by Ben & Jerry’s.
We had a chocolate chip cookie dough cinnamon roll which included, as you might imagine, little balls of cookie dough and chocolate chips, all placed atop of gooey cinnamon dough frosting. The price of the roll was a little steep at $4.75, with a plain roll going for $4.00 (although there are discounts for students). We also grabbed a carton of soy milk to help wash down what we were sure was going to be an overwhelmingly sweet roll. Certainly the oddest moment of our visit was that the transaction took place not on your traditional cash register, but on an iPad, in which we could enter our e-mail address to be sent a receipt.
The atmosphere of the shop was also quite different from anywhere else we could recall being served cinnamon rolls. Many of the employees were heavily tattooed and pierced, and place seems to be very intent upon making the breakfast pastries cool and hip.
When we tasted the actual cinnamon roll, we realized that it was in fact sweeter than we’d anticipated, and is probably best shared to avoid sweetness-overload. However, the biggest surprise came when we were surfing online later and realized that the rolls are in fact 100 percent vegan. Although certainly an indulgence in any diet, vegan or otherwise, we were a bit shocked to find that they were free of eggs, diary and cholesterol. Go figure.
Should you be looking to try a roll for yourself, the shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And a little bird (OK, their event planner) tells us that
they’ll be having a promo week August 23-27 during which students will receive a 25 percent discount. And during a promo week August 23-27 there will be different specials for students every day. (Note: Edited for accuracy)
