Maybe you’ve seen this guy out and about this past month: Introducing … (drumroll please) … Benjamin Smythe!
We stopped and chatted with him, overjoyed to discover not another starry-eyed idealist but someone earnestly trying to find happiness and help others to theirs: “I try to go for one smile every day, it keeps the pressure low, and I always do get a smile. Sometimes it really makes someone’s day: I remember the first time I did this, a woman came up to me, crying.”
Someone walking by flipped his phone shut and, without slowing, laughed softly as he said, “If only…” as a response to the sign.
“I used to try to debate them, but now I don’t,” Smythe said. “I can’t go in there and fix everything [he gestures at my head], but I can reflect my self-love and acceptance.”
He is sincere and intelligent, easy to talk to, ever questioning. If you spot him on campus, we highly recommend taking a minute out of your oh-so-busy life to ask him about his. You won’t regret it.
“We don’t know what makes us happy; we’re making it up as we go along. For me, this is it, not tomorrow or yesterday. This is life.”
