The Daily Clog and its curse on Cal sports

3030939_a9883342b7This past weekend, while many of you suckers beloved readers were calling Main Stacks home and knee-deep in midterm studying (can someone please explain to us why professors call ‘em “midterms” when we’re only five weeks into the semester?), the Clog took an excursion down south to enjoy the beautiful, polluted auburn skies/beach water of Los Angeles, California.

And, in realizing that our then No. 1 Cal women’s volleyball team would be battling Pac-12 adversaries USC and UCLA on consecutive nights, we figured we’d take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate a couple of victories in enemy territory.

Of course, the gods recognized our arrogant thought process and threw a wrench in our plans.

In 13 games, the Bears had only lost one set and that was to No.2 ranked Stanford. That’s 39 – 1! Surely the No. 12 Trojans and the No. 7 Bruins team would be no match, right? Very, very, very wrong. In the two L.A. games combined, Cal would only win one set (against UCLA) on the road to their first two losses of the season.

Maybe our presence at a couple of road games against good opponents is not enough evidence to prove the title of this post. But, there is this sad story that truly broke our collective heart upon hearing the tragic news:

Last Saturday, we posted an article [1] here about the Cal women’s soccer team (8-1) defying all odds en route to an eight-game winning streak and a No. 17 national ranking. We spoke of senior co-captain Katie Benz who has led the team with 10 goals and was having by far her best year in a Bears uniform.

Unfortunately, Sunday’s game against Santa Clara University not only brought the winning streak to an end with a 3-0 loss, but also, quite possibly, Katie Benz’s Cal career after the senior suffered a broken leg [2] from a rough tackle by a Broncos defender.

Sigh.

We here at the Daily Clog/Daily Cal wish you all the best, Katie, and thank you for your contribution to Cal sports.

The show must go on, however. Both teams will get a chance to break the curse this weekend. If not, we’ll likely be selling “Break the Curse Cookies” on Sproul Plaza next week.

The No.4 Cal volleyball team plays Arizona (10-3) this Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. and Arizona State (4-9) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Both games are at Haas Pavilion.

The No. 15 Cal soccer team travels to Washington for games against Washington (4-4-2) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Washington State (7-3-1) on Sunday at noon.
