6046180567_a24af92530_bFeeling artsy? The beautiful weather that has broken through the lightening storm is making us feel closer to the world of aesthetics. If you have had your fill of hangovers this weekend, and are at the point where the smell of alcohol is making you sick, it may be time to head over to the Legion of Honor for a different kind of sensory experience. The Legion of Honor [1]is showing two very special exhibitions [2] that will leave you feeling like quite the classy college student. Both exhibits are good for the brain and good for the soul.

The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde, 1860-1900: This exhibit will have you “oooooing” and  “awwwing,” as no other words can describe the beauty before your eyes. It showcases the entirety of the Aesthetic Movement’s output. The work of such artistic rock stars as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, James McNeill Whistler and Edward Burne-Jones will be available for your viewing pleasure. The soft lines and brilliant lighting of these works will have you wanting to try your hand at painting, only to be thoroughly disappointed at your utter failure at drawing anything other than a stick-figure-like representation of your favorite masterpiece. Not only will paintings be shown, but also household furniture and other items that demonstrate the brilliant attention to detail of all manufacturers in the Victorian period.

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: Not just for the fashion forward, but for all who wear clothes, this exhibit will show the long process of making a couture piece. Fashion designers may get a bad wrap in movies such as Zoolander, but in reality they are more than just angry Mugatus. A lot goes into making a couture piece and in this exhibit you will be able to see the creative process. From first sketches to final projects, this multi-media exhibit will show the innovative designs of Gaultier. The exhibit will showcase his work from the early 1970s till 2010.  The lucky attendee will also get to see video footage of his collaborations with Madonna and other musicians and actors.

We are ready to get all artsy-fartsy, and spend some time preparing our minds for finals by contemplating the world of the arts. So, we will be putting on our berets, maybe painting on a mustache and enjoying what the Legion has to offer. The museum is open from 9:30 – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. With a current student ID we could get in for only $16!
