Hidden perils of CalMail transition

We all love Google. No matter how many ads we see about Bing beating Google in blind tests, we’ll still use Google. So Calmail switching over to Google Apps [1] (and basically Gmail) is great. Also, the new CalMail will be called bMail. Just throwing that out there to avoid confusion.

Or is it?

The University states that a lot of students have their CalMail forwarded to Gmail addresses [2], and even when we start using bMail, this will still be an option. But, what won’t be an option is linking your CalMail to your Google Account.

Here’s what that means. Right now, if you link your CalMail to your Google Account, you can access all your Google Docs through the same account. When, however, CalMail becomes bMail, your CalMail will get its own Google Account which can’t be linked to your old Google Account. This means that you’ll now have different Google Docs accounts for your regular Gmail and your CalMail.

For some people, this might be great. A separation of Google Docs can help them keep their Berkeley lives and other lives separate. Some people never used CalMail and Google Docs together, so it won’t really matter to them.

And yes, Google does offer having multiple accounts linked to one account to allow for easy switching between accounts, but you’re still switching accounts. You can’t see everything at the same time. Unless of course, you share everything with both accounts, but that sounds like a lot of work.

So for those of us who have our Calmail and Google Docs accounts, it remains to be seen how we handle our Google Docs in the future.
