Californian stereotypes: hella beachy pot-smokin’ bimbos

We got a lot of good answers to our questions, and we appreciate the people who took time out to talk to us.

For NorCal residents, people had the impression that they were hella hip, liberal and environmentally conscious. At least in the Bay Area, these things are easy to run into, even though they’re not entirely representative. The stereotype that people from NorCal are distinctly “pot smokers” is funny (and erroneous), as people from SoCal smoke all the time – at least from what we’ve experienced. We think this is just a Californian thing. Weed solidarity, brothers and sisters!

As for SoCal, people had the impression that they were beachy, bleachy, superficial and sexy. We can vouch for the fact that all of these things can be found down there. The beach, however, is not easily accessible to the majority of LA. While we realize that LA isn’t the only part of SoCal, it got us wondering how this stereotype came about. We suppose the same way they all came about — our desire to fit people into easy, precise groups. Making room for all of the inevitable variety takes too much time!

People who meet these stereotypes surely exist, but stereotypes are generally a little ridiculous. In a place where most diversity is celebrated, it seems odd that there’s such animosity towards this regional diversity. Instead perhaps we should revel in the fact we are all Californians (even if you’re originally from outside of the state)!
