We admit it–we never thought we’d actually be so proud of the tree-sitters.
But who could blame us for having such a rapid shift of opinion after about 500 UC Santa Cruz students and local community members gathered Wednesday to support their own four tree-sitters.
Though they did have 500 supporters, we can brag that we had more than four tree-sitters. And we they did last a really, really, really (almost ridiculously) long time.
True, we didn’t have the sort of violence that UCSC did. We’re not sure if we’re proud of that or jealous.
Don’t get us wrong—we have a special place in our heart for our fellow UC Cen-California hippie friends. (The most obvious reason is that they pose no sports-related threat).
But we were the original hippie campus. And this just feels like another (albeit generally lamer) FSM all over again. And we can use that acronym because (not only was it started at Berkeley and copied by everyone else) we have a cafe named after it! Does Santa Cruz have an FSM Cafe?
We don’t think they do. And it’s a known fact that they are copying Berkeley.
“We’ve been really inspired by what’s going on at Berkeley,” (said Jennifer Charles, UC Santa Cruz alumna and spokesperson for the tree-sitters). “I think all the UCs are experiencing the same kind of issues with the privatization of the university and (administrators) not listening to student input.”
At least we appreciate the recognition and the comparison between the two protests in nearly every paper that covers it.
Yesterday, the day after the protest, things were quieter at UCSC. But, of course, our tree-sitter stint didn’t lull to silence over night.
In fact, it still hasn’t lulled to silence. We’re only proud of that when we are comparing Berkeley to Santa Cruz. Otherwise, we are a little tired of tree-sitters and their way-too-extensive stay in the Nuclear-Free-Vegan-Save-the-Trees Zone.
