We were so tied up in the Berkeley City Council’s concern for the fates of balloon-hungry sea critters on Tuesday, we failed to mention the re-writing of a Berkeley trespassing law. Protestors are now freer to roam our campus.

“What is this?” you ask “Protection for tree-sitters, too little too late?”

Surprise! The council’s revision is actually in reaction–supposedly–to the arrest of a couple of conservative protestors, one pro-life supporter and one gay hater (pro-straight supporter?).

The revision mandates the “freedom of speech or assembly on outdoor property owned and controlled by a public entity.” In laymen’s terms, “Flame on, ye liberals of Berkeley, flame on!”

Conservatives arrested, followed by the revealing of a liberal hidden agenda:

Liberals: 2
Conservatives: 0

Isaiah Rider may not be much of a “celebrity” anymore, for his NBA career (which included stand-out time with the Minnesota Timberwolves) has ended.

But he’s still giving people something to talk about, as proven yesterday, when

Berkeley police officers responded to a report at 9 a.m. of a disturbance between a taxi cab driver and [Rider].

Rider, 36, was taken into custody on a bench warrant issued by Alameda County for unlawful possession of a firearm as well a $5,000 warrant for grand theft issued by the Oakland Police Department.

Sadly, Rider could probably afford whatever he was originally arrested for stealing.

Ah, celebrities. Why do they insist on doing what they shouldn’t be doing in Berkeley?

Just months after the city of San Francisco began investigating city Supervisor Ed Jew’s residency, Berkeley rent board member Chris Kavanagh was arrested in an Oakland coffee shop Friday on charges of, like Jew, not living in the area in which he holds office. By law, elected officials must reside in the city they serve; in Jew’s case, officials must reside in the district they serve.

Documents released by Berkeley show that the city received a complaint back in 2002 alleging that Kavanagh lived in Oakland. This past Tuesday, Kavanagh spoke publicly about the prompted investigation, apologizing to and thanking fellow board members, though he did not offer details concerning his residency. And we thought something exciting would happen.

Kavanagh has served on the Rent Stabilization Board since 2002. He wrote a letter to the editor of The Daily Californian, as well as an article published by the Daily Cal in 2003 defending the rent board’s decision to raise registration fees. At least he’s been doing his job?

Kavanagh seems like a fairly upstanding guy–he was re-elected to his position, which surely counts for something. Maybe we’re not happy with the egregious rent that he and his fellow board members aren’t exactly “stabilizing,” but come on: residency scandal? His potential prison stint doesn’t seem nearly as interesting as it could be, especially for a town riddled with crime, hippies in trees, crazies and porn star namesakes.

Say it ain’t so! Former mayoral candidate and dreamy oak grove protester Zachary RunningWolf spent a long weekend in Berkeley Jail after being arrested Friday on three outstanding traffic warrants.

Though released yesterday on his own recognizance, RunningWolf is far from out of the woods.

Already facing charges of resisting arrest and threatening a police officer, RunningWolf’s latest arrest cements his reputation as the most hardcore player in the Oakgate drama.

Still we have to wonder what a tree sitter is doing with outstanding traffic warrants. But that’s really for RunningWolf and his attorneys to figure out.

Yes, he actually has a legal team to represent him. And according to the Daily Cal, these are lawyers he hired, which we guess means that he’s paying them.

And just in case you thought his defense would be plenty for RunningWolf to handle, he also plans to sue the university for false arrest. Apparently, he plans to hire more counsel for this.

We just hope this tree sitter understands exactly how much paper goes into legal battles.
