Now this may be old news for some, but for those of us who <del datetime="2009-11-15T21:44:17+00:00">can’t afford a TV</del> had midterms these past few weeks, Berkeley, of all places, was featured on last week’s episode of America’s Most Wanted.

The crime in question was a triple homicide that took place in the city earlier this year. It began with the shooting death of Charles Davis at 10th Street and Allston Way. In the ensuing high-speed police chase, the suspects’ car crashed, killing pedestrian Floyd Ross and fellow motorist Todd Perea. Two of the four supsects in the car fled the scene on foot, and three of the four have now been arrested. Still on the loose is Rafael Campbell, who hails from Oakland and is apparently involved in the rap scene there.

A physical description of Campbell and a tip line are available on this site. The show featured a re-enactment of the crime, filmed at a different location in Berkeley, and can be viewed here.

While the show has contributed to the capture of many criminals, the shoot raised some eyebrows among locals who did not want their neighborhoods to be featured or associated with the crime.

Two men were taken into custody yesterday by the UCPD in connection with the robbery of a Clark Kerr dorm three weeks ago. 21-year-olds Gary Doxy and R.J. Garrett, both ex-football players, are alleged to have held four of their peers at gunpoint while demanding wallets and laptops. Turns out the gun was a BB gun. Not that that makes it all better or anything.

Significantly, police say that the robbery may have been incited by some racial slurs–ones that a drunk white male crew member allegedly made during the course of a party. News of the slurs is believed to have eventually reached Doxy and Garrett, who then allegedly proceeded to stick up two members of the crew team and some incidental roommates. Specifically, police believe they robbed crew members who hadn’t made the offensive comments themselves. Come again?

Robbers crawled through an open window in a Clark Kerr dorm last night, which immediately begs two questions. One: whose brilliant idea was it to build ground-floor Clark Kerr windows so big and wide that six-footers can just sail right through them? Two, which in retrospect isn’t so surprising considering point one: dangerous criminal people with guns are targeting dorms now?

Police officials are feeling the shock too. The four students whose dormitory was broken into were apparently ordered to give up laptops and wallets at gun-point. The assailants left with one of each and have not been apprehended. None of the students were injured. We direct our most sincere expressions of gratitude heavenward.

A 22-year-old man was shot in front of a Berkeley hair salon around 1 p.m. this afternoon. Police say the wounds weren’t fatal, as the victim was able to receive care from emergency personnel shortly after the altercation. Nothing much is known about the incident, which probably explains why the po-po are scratching their heads and fishing the waters for details. The Oakland Tribune lists 981-5900 as the contact number, so on the off-chance that you were moseying by 2902 Sacramento Street this afternoon and saw anything of value, you know who to call.

We got nuthin’. On that grim note, this shooting may recall the rash of shootings that vexed our fair city last semester. With any luck there’ll be no more of those this year. Knock on wood, folks.

Almost. All we need is an angsty bat hero–and now we might even have one. Kind of.

The San Jose Mercury News warns us to stay away from wild animals after a rabid bat was found in North Berkeley last week. Why the Merc loves to report about our humble little city in such great detail is a mystery, but residents, consider yourself cautioned. This bat doesn’t go around saving people–and neither do its staggering skunk and raccoon friends. We’d stay away from the squirrels, too, no matter how cute they look. Apparently, Alameda County is a designated “rabid area,” so this is fairly normal.

Come to think of it, we’ve seen quite a lot of potentially disoriented roadkill lately–we saw two smushed rodents driving down North Shattuck Avenue alone. Could we be in the midst of an unprecedentedly large outbreak? Is this a sign that the city is going to the dogs–er, rabid bats? Only time will tell.

With the crime that recently worried students and sent the LJ Community into a bigger frenzy than an earthquake might, we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands. We know you’re too proud to use BearWALK, so we came up with the top ten suggestions for ensuring your personal safety.

Note: You should know by now to not take us so seriously.

10. Fire arms. No, literally: Set your arms ablaze and brandish boldly.
9. Grab Harry Potter’s Invisibility Cloak. Or, better yet, get over the series and just chuck your fat tome at any attacker. Also, the epilogue sucked. There, we said it.
8. Carry around your hookah ’cause, hey, everyone likes the guy with the hookah.
7. Call the ASUC to do something about it.
6. Tote your own taser.
5. Join Student Action–get it DONE.
4. Put your trust in the university. Student No. 16273637, we have your utmost security in mind.
3. Live in Oakland.
2. Let the university believe it needs to protect you from raging football fans. Carry around a ten-foot fence wherever you go.
1. Pass out flyers. Watch your supposed assailant whip out an iPod, a cell phone and sunglasses in one second flat.

Why is the Clog putting up this clip of former Secretary of Labor and professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy Robert Reich on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”? It’s awesome, for one. And practically speaking, we think it shows the “get tough on crime” approach we need in the face of recent events. We hope the Berkeley police will get the memo. Let’s get Conan to lead the crackdown.

Students received an e-mail from UCPD and Jonathan Poullard, dean of students, about recent crime in our community. We're posting the highlights here to help improve campus safety. Because knowing is half the battle.

We’re posting the highlights here to help improve campus safety. Because knowing is half the battle.

The following is very sic:

bq. As you may be aware there were a number of armed robberies on campus and near the residence halls that occurred over the past two weeks. It’s important to realize that as with any college campus, ours is not immune from crime. While the Berkeley campus and surrounding areas are generally as safe as other urban areas, the surge over the past two weeks in incidents of robbery, some involving weapons, was unusual. UC Police Department (UCPD) and the City of Berkeley police are aware of the problem and are taking extra measures in response. These include increased uniformed and plain-clothes patrols, as well as
coordination with other local agencies to analyze the trends.

bq. We want to be sure you have accurate information about these recent incidents. There have been nine robberies between September 1 and September 10 on and around the Berkeley campus. Suspects have been arrested in four of the nine
cases. We understand that these crimes have raised concerns about safety. We share these concerns and have been working to address them.

bq. The robbery that occurred on campus near Haviland Hall on Monday evening, September 10 caused the most reaction from our community. In that case, the victim was stuck by several pellets fired from a bb gun. The victim was also punched and kicked after initially resisting the robbery attempt. UCPD was called and advised that there was a robbery in progress and that shots were fired and that the victim may be injured. UCPD officers arrived very soon after the call, saw the two juvenile suspects and pursued them. One was caught quickly. Although the other suspect eluded officers for nearly 90 minutes; he was located and apprehended and found to be in possession of the
bb gun. During the search for the second suspect, our officers asked people in the area to “shelter in place” in their offices or residences. The arrests on Monday evening led to other cases being closed, and detectives from the City of Berkeley and the UCPD are following up on other leads.

The e-mail notes a few numbers of use:

* For emergencies on or around the campus: 510-642-3333. UCPD will respond.

* BearWALK: 510-642-WALK. You can use the number after dusk and before 1:45am. BearWALK will send a uniformed Community Service Office to escort you anywhere within four or five blocks of campus. Usually, the CSOs are students. Several of the Clogs friends work or have worked at BearWALK in the past. Highly recommended.

* Night Safety Shuttles: 510-642-WALK. Find out when the next shuttle stops near you. You can use the Night Safety Shuttle to travel to BART or to the southside residence halls. The Ride-To-Your-Door lines allow you to ride all the way home within service area boundaries.

* Owl Service: 510-642-6760. Between 3 a.m. and 5:45 a.m., UCPD offers van pick up and drop off service from door to door.
