Being cheap bastards must come with Daily Cal territory. Today the paper highlighted some deals around campus for all your arts and entertainment purposes. The general gist?
* Blake’s, Shattuck Down Low, 924 Gilman and SF’s Bottom of the Hill for some live music
* United Artists’ Flashback Features for old flicks
* Half-Price Books for–you guessed it–books
* Oh hai, don’t forget the local Chinatowns either

Or you could, you know, download stuff semi- not really legally of the Intarwebz. Just saying.

Hey, you. Yes, we’re talking to you. And so is Hollywood. As students, we are a target demographic. As such, we have the responsibility to pay attention to what’s hot.

And right now, there’s nothing hotter than superhero movies. “The Dark Knight” replaced the “Spiderman 3″ weekend record this summer, so what? Old news. Right now, we’re raving about the hot release of the “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” trailer. read more »

Maybe you’ve got an awesome summer ahead, but more likely than not, you’re going to summer school, working, or just plain studying. If you need some downtime and detest spending 10 bucks to see a movie in theaters, bring the movie home … for free.

foodFree food. As a natural extension of Cal Day, the co-ops are opening up their in-house foodie fests to the general public for the rest of this week. If you live off culinary delights like top ramen and mayonnaise-slathered bologna sandwiches like we do, now’s your chance to stave off death by malicious triglycerides and hobnob with some hippies in the process.

Speaking of hippies, Loth’s dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight, followed by Casa Zimbabwe at 7 p.m. and Afro House at 7:30 p.m. The rest of the schedule follows after the cut. read more »

21Remember “21″? It’s that one movie based on real life card-counting MIT students who wring the Vegas blackjack tables for tens of thousands of Ben Franklins. It’s got Jim Sturgess in it. Jim Sturgess was previously seen doing a lot of trippy drugs opposite Evan Rachel Wood in “Across the Universe.” Jim Sturgess is pretty fine.

The same probably can’t be said about the movie itself. Rotten Tomatoes slapped “21″ with a score of 32%, and Metacritic isn’t too forgiving either. Nevertheless, Shattuck Cinemas is showing a free screening of the movie tonight at 8 p.m. Who can argue with free?

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The theater won’t require passes, but keep in mind it’s first come first serve.

ZOMG, you’re a star

Saturday may be your day if you’ve ever dreamed of being on TV. Tomorrow, San Francisco will host two casting calls: one for “Real World” and one for Bravo’s new show “The Dating Project.”

The casting call for “Real World” will last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Suite 181 in SF. Bring in a recent picture and a photo ID. Oh, and don’t be any older than 24, mmkay? Maturity not accepted here.

If you are over 24 years old (say, between 25 and 35) and you’re a guy, “The Dating Project” is more up your alley. The casting call opens at 1 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. for both Saturday and Sunday. You can hit up the Bravo crew at Broadway Studios, but it’d be best to e-mail first at datingprojectcasting@gmail.com. Tell ‘em your name and number and don’t forget that photo. You might be lucky enough to woo a “young Hollywood Starlet (sic)” in Hollywood Hills.

 CalTV’s Tim Jaconnette continues his triple espresso-fueled road trip through the wild world of celebrity. This time he turns his guns on Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, and Monica Bellucci, the stars of the upcoming movie “Shoot ‘Em Up.”The Clog thinks he’s improved quite a bit as an interviewer since the last time we checked in, but we might just be distracted by Monica Belllucci (sort of like how she distracted us from how lousy those Matrix sequels were, come to think of it).Some advice from your friends at the Clog, Tim? Less with the “Superbad” guys, more with Bellucci. That’s a life lesson right there.CalTV interviews the “Shoot ‘em Up” cast [CalTV]Earlier: ‘Superbad’ Interview Just Sorta Bad
