As if it isn’t enough that she helped capture Phillip Garrido, Ally Jacobs continues to restore our faith in humanity. She saved Jaycee Dugard, she’s been on Oprah, and now UCPD officer Jacobs recently visited her alma mater, Santa Margarita Catholic High School, to dispense her wisdom.

What’d she have to say? The main idea is trust your instincts. “Just listen to your voice. It’s always right, it’s there for a reason,” Jacobs explained. She used her own life as an example. She saw Garrido with the girls and knew something wasn’t quite right, so she did a little extra digging.

Another cool fact about Jacobs? When she was younger, a popular guy at her high school stole beer from a grocery store, and she reported him. Now don’t go screaming narc on us. Look at it this way: she did not “bow in the face of potential social stigma.” And that takes a ballsy woman, the same badass who helped get Garrido.

Need any more convincing that this woman is a BAMF? We’ll leave you with this: “She watched ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ as a girl and so related to Jodie Foster’s character that she wanted to become an FBI agent and go after psychopaths.”

Ally, believe us when we say that Clarice would be so proud.

Since the darn storm is keeping you in, what will you be doing today at four o’clock? That’s right, you will be watching Oprah.

No, it’s not to see her interview the elusive Cormac McCarthy, or to see the now passé Tom Cruise couch-jumping incident. This time it’s something a little closer to home. Oprah will be interviewing UCPD’s Lisa Campbell and Ally Jacobs, the two brave police officers whose keen eyes led to the arrest of kidnapper Phillip Garrido.

The Clog is grateful that these ladies are getting their moment in the spotlight. Campbell, whose mother worked with Oprah’s security detail in the ’80s, is thrilled by the experience. “The entertainment giant is a ’shero,’ Campbell says. ‘She has dedicated her life to sharing her gifts and talent, and changing one consciousness at a time.’”

We can think of a few more sheroes, actually. They’ll be on Oprah tonight. You won’t want to miss it.

Onward: Lisa Campbell, UC Berkeley police specialist, will be honored tonight for her role in the capture of Phillip Garrido last month.

The ceremony is set to take place place in San Ramon, Campbell’s hometown, where Rep. Jerry McNerney and others will bestow upon the heroic officer a Congressional Record Statement commending both Campbell and fellow officer Allison Jacobs for assisting in Garrido’s arrest.

Not only (as if it isn’t quite enough?) is Garrido alleged to have kidnapped and raped Jaycee Dugard when she was eleven years old; he is furthermore being investigated in connection with the disappearance of two other young girls in the late 1980s. As of Friday, sniffer dogs had reportedly found the ’scent of human remains’ on Garrido’s property, although evidence thus far remains inconclusive.

We at UC Berkeley are collectively thrilled about the capture of Phillip Garrido last week. And it’s fantastic that our campus played a role in setting Jaycee Dugard free to her family; that obviously goes without saying.

Although it apparently isn’t as obvious as we’d think, considering university officials are spreading the word as far and wide as … Iran?

Recall, if you will, the three Americans who were detained after (apparently inadvertently) crossing over into Iran while hiking in Kurdish Iraq. Since the July 31 arrest, there has been virtually no indication on the part of the Iranian government as to whether or not they’ll be releasing Sarah Shourd, Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer, all three of whom are definitely still in custody.

We can only hope that, where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has failed, Robert Birgeneau will miraculously succeed, as the Chancellor has now pledged the university’s support to Clinton in bringing the hikers home. And in a leap of logic that’s left us sort of scratching our heads, Vice Chancellor Claire Holmes drew an interesting parallel between this particular predicament and that of Jaycee Dugard, stating that “an amazing reunification of a family occurred at UC Berkeley” and that “we are hoping that the spirit of reunification of family will extend to these three families.”

Well … still not too sure how the two are related. Nevertheless, the Clog also sends its sincere well wishes to Shourd, Fattal and Bauer, and hopes that they all return home safely.

Or so was the logic of UCPD officers Lisa Campbell and Allison Jacobs.

Jacobs described the kids as being programmed – “almost like ‘Little House on the Prairie’ meets robots.” She thanks her “motherly intuition” for enabling her to spot alleged kidnapper/child abuser/former LSD addict/supercreep Phillip Garrido.

Even though he was known on his block as “Creepy Phil” and his home was subject to regular visits and searches (the man even wore a GPS-linked ankle bracelet that tracked his every move), the fact that he was housing his kidnap victim – and the two kids he fathered with her – in his backyard for the past 18 years remained a mystery to the rest of the world.

Well not exactly. Turns out most of the neighbors knew about the suspicious tents all along. Back in 2006 a neighbor called 911 and described Garrido as a “psychotic sex addict who was living with children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.” The investigating officer sent to his home warned Garrido that the tents could be a code violation before leaving.

Here’s some other strange tidbits:

After not seeing each other for 18 years, Jaycee Dugard, the kidnap victim, greeted her mother by saying, “Hi, mom, I have babies.”

Garrido gave an incoherent phone interview to KCRA-TV from the county jail Thursday in which he denied the kidnapping and said that he had turned his life around since the birth of his first daughter 15 years ago.

He met his wife while he was serving time at the federal penitentiary.

He’s currently under suspicion for the unsolved murders of several prostitutes, whose bodies were dumped near an industrial park where Garrido worked during the 1990s.

He and his wife are now on suicide watch in Contra Costa County Jail.
