We hate to beat a dead horse (or a dead cause, as the case may be) but so long as people keep doing new stupid things, we’ll keep writing about them. As luck would have it, Friday was the culmination of a week’s worth of stup–er–Code Pink! (By the way, we officially recognize that we, like “The Daily Show“, are taking kind of a cheap shot here, but cut us some slack–we don’t have a whole country’s worth of idiocy to work with.)

Not even Jon Stewart could stop this indomitable bunch, and in honor of the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq they stepped up their game and set up a “green zone” outside the Marine recruiting center. Code Pink camped out last Sunday and bombarded the oppressors with Yoga, pot luck lunches, house plants, and eco-documentaries with what we’re assuming was eco-friendly popcorn. And yet, somehow, they still managed to get themselves arrested before the week was up.

On Friday afternoon, after a little scuffle with the Po Po, two women were cited for crossing the line and having themselves a little impromptu sit-in. Like “Degrassi,” they went there, and were taken downtown for apparently blocking foot traffic. Now that’s blind dedication to a dubious cause the likes of which we haven’t seen since Michael Schuck–well, minus his whole “avoid arrest at all costs” bit, anyway. But hey, no harm no foul, right?

UC Berkeley treated our resident Cal parakeet, “Fresh,” to quite a spectacle yesterday–and we’re not talking about the performers for Pilipino Cultural Night who were practicing a heartfelt rendition of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” on Dwinelle Plaza, directly across from his perch.

No, Fresh had a gang of angry supporters by his police-lined fences on Sunday afternoon. Among the riled up company was our favorite all-purpose protester, Zachary RunningWolf–tricked out in his usual impeccably-selected anti-American t-shirt.

The Clog happened to be there when the grandmother-pushing and subsequent nonsensical yelling began. “White males kill their mothers!” declared one angry woman, repeatedly, after police forcefully prevented an elderly woman from giving Fresh a little nourishment.

One guy eventually snagged a heroically symbolic arrest after throwing a chain of water bottles to the Wheeler Hall treewok.

One of the bottles fell, however. A cop promptly picked it up and emptied it in silent revenge. Cue the cries of “YOU BASTARD!”

And then it got boring.

Apparently, RunningWolf was also there to protest against the university’s ownership of Native-American remains. Yes, at a tree sit. We don’t even know what tree-people are protesting anymore. Development? The lack of affirmative action? The last season of “The Wire”? Pick a cause, any cause– ’cause every protest has an element of anti-everything: anti-cops, anti-democratization, anti-shower.

Such is the multi-purpose nature of a tree-sit–in Berkeley, at least.

Everyone’s favorite Treewok Village has a new addition: a chain-link fence the university ordered erected during the wee hours of this Wednesday morning. We were still asleep, and we’re sure the Save the Oaks people were, too, until construction crews started pounding in the fence posts. And we’d be pretty cranky, too, if someone woke us up that early and we hadn’t showered in nine months. As if the rubberneckers didn’t do enough to showcase the zoo animal performance art piece, the fence better defines what can only be described by us snarky individuals as the Nuclear-Free-Vegan-Save-the-Trees Zone. The zone is also free of supplies like, say, food, but as the Daily Cal reports, Zachary Running Wolf proposes a hunger strike, which seems like a pretty convenient solution to the supply-free problem. But the ever-so-timely construction (typical; it only took them a year) could prove to be more ominous, given that fences historically just delay the inevitable “peaceful” confrontation.Image Source: Skyler Reid, Daily CalBREAKING: POLICE ERECT FENCE AROUND UC BERKELEY TREE-SIT PROTEST [Daily Cal]
