This time it’s Compass, the Committee for Philippine Studies. The group believes that it’s time for UC Berkeley to establish Philippine Studies classes in addition to securing their Tagalog classes in the mind-bending chaos that is rearranging the curriculum to fit around budget deficits.

The club wants the university to hire a Philippine Studies professor and then perhaps establish a department of Philippine Studies on campus. Ideally, the club says, this will lead to Philippine Studies departments at other UCs as well. About 800 Compass members protested the walkout, “even performing a traditional Filipino tinikling dance on the campus’ famed Sproul Plaza.”

The group is still actively pursuing this goal. To put it bluntly, they want what they want and they’ll get it somehow. We only hope Yudof understands that.

Of course, Anderson is not representative of Berkeley. Still, he was an unyielding occupying force in the trees outside Memorial Stadium during the 21-month protest that ended last September (hundreds of thousands of tax dollars later). Then known as “Cricket,” his friends and fellow sitters praised 37-year-old Anderson for his idealism and resilient opposition to oppression everywhere. It was this very spirit that fatefully brought him to the West Bank in Israel—after getting involved in a protest that escalated to dangerous levels—and left Cricket in critical condition. The Clog sends Anderson its hopes for a successful recovery.

A variety of groups on campus–Berkeley NOW, V-Day and Women’s Identity and Sexuality Small Group–will host a protest of sorts in response to the spate of recent sexual assaults around campus. Last week we blogged about the skirt creeper, but just this weekend he’s added two more assaults to his growing tally.

The rally’s designed to let women “feel safe wearing whatever we choose,” which is important considering that the Daily Cal states that the most recent victims were not wearing skirts. Seriously, someone needs to mace this guy.

When: Wednesday, Mar. 4
Time: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where: Upper Sproul Plaza

Next week, conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly will lead a talk titled “Feminism vs. Conservatism” on campus. We’re surprised we haven’t heard more about this elsewhere (well, besides from the Cal Patriot Blog, which only tells us “LEFTISTS BEWARE”).

Schlafly is best known for her success in stopping the Equal Rights Amendment during the 1970s, but she also made news last year with Washington University in St. Louis. Because of her politics (attacks against feminism, saying things like married women can’t be raped by their husbands), she caused a stir when the university awarded her an honorary doctorate during a commencement ceremony. Thousands of students turned their backs to her in protest and some faculty left the stage. On the other hand, she’s also been a respected conservative … among conservatives.

The event page asks that no signs be brought in, but we can’t be wrong in assuming that there must be a protest brewing. Right?

When: Tuesday, Feb. 24
Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Where: 110 Barrows Hall

Well, who didn’t see this one coming?
Everyone knows that pictures of faces are blank canvas for mustache amendments and unibrow bridges. Duh.
And the banners? We’ve seen the bulletin boards choked with flyers for various extracurriculars and calls-to-arms. Where else would such a banner be hung … in a tree? Scoff.
