All volunteers that want to clean up the black, gooey stuff, must attend a "free hazardous materials handling training class" before they can participate in organized cleanups. However, so many volunteers have shown up, that there were over 50 people turned away from Saturday's training class alone.

Cleaning up the Bay is the hip thing to do, and you only need Facebook to tell you that. The Save Our Bay group has grown at a rate to almost rival that of the Colbert-for-president fanbase.

Volunteer training sessions have been going on for the past two weeks. The sessions instruct volunteers on topics such as the impact oil can have on the human body and the chemical properties of petroleum.

It doesn't sound like sludging around in black goo is as fun as Shakira makes it seem.

All volunteers that want to clean up the black, gooey stuff, must attend a “free hazardous materials handling training class” before they can participate in organized cleanups. However, so many volunteers have shown up, that there were over 50 people turned away from Saturday’s training class alone.Cleaning up the Bay is the hip thing to do, and you only need Facebook to tell you that. The Save Our Bay group has grown at a rate to almost rival that of the Colbert-for-president fanbase.Volunteer training sessions have been going on for the past two weeks. The sessions instruct volunteers on topics such as the impact oil can have on the human body and the chemical properties of petroleum. It doesn’t sound like sludging around in black goo is as fun as Shakira makes it seem. The Daily Cal interviewed a volunteer who led us to believe so.

“This stuff is so nasty,” [a volunteer], who got oil on her hand during cleanup, said. “I couldn’t get it off for two days.”

Maybe she wasn’t complaining, maybe she was simply delighting in how gross it was. Maybe complaining only occurs among those who don’t the chance to get down and dirty.

Those turned away Saturday morning hurled epithets at everything from Big Oil for causing the mess, to Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for not being there, to the city of Berkeley for not acquiring a bigger auditorium for the sessions.

So we recommend taking a lesson from the very oil-soaked animals that volunteers are trying to save. For those who want to help, we advise arriving at training sessions early, so you have the best chance at getting into the grime.Image Source: Eli Weissman, Daily CalEarlier: Stay Away From the Bay!Berkeley Residents Flock to Volunteer in Oil Spill Cleanup [Daily Cal]Overflow crowd for cleanup class [Contra Costa Times]
