The college-student-turned-Hooters-waitress from San Diego, who was asked to exit the plane for being dressed “inappropriately” in a miniskirt, tank top and short cardigan (but was allowed to remain on board with a blanket across her lap), appeared on the “Today Show” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to discuss the airlines’ “good judgment” policy that allows flight crews to deny boarding passengers who have bad BO, are inappropriately dressed, intoxicated or just plain rude.
Ebbert’s mom initially wrote a letter asking for an apology, but no word came. Eventually, the press started calling Southwest. Their CEO officially apologized for the way they reacted in a letter read during Friday’s taping of “Dr. Phil,” to be aired Tuesday, and offered her two free round-trip flights because that’s cheaper than being sued.
If the miniskirt trend at a San Diego Hooters is anything like the teeny dress trend we’ve seen around Berkeley lately (and please, please wear underwear! And stop bending over!), then maybe the 40-something male flight attendant was right to call her on it. Then again, Ebbert claims she wore the same outfit on a flight later that day and was complimented by a flight attendant for her fashion. Who knows?
Still, this bodes ill for those of us at UC Berkeley who depend on Southwest for cheap, relatively comfortable and on-time air travel, particularly for those easily guilted by Facebook groups crying “boycott!”
We don’t care too much about short skirts. At least it’s obvious there isn’t a kilo of cocaine strapped to our thighs.
But for those planning to hop down to southern California anytime soon, we recommend ankle-length skirts and turtlenecks. And Mormon underwear (just to be safe).
