3371810935_4cb6766180_b-1Aw Spring! The time of year where pink and purple girls and boys can be spotted walking through Sproul plaza, when that Bollywood song is stuck in your head all day, when….not your typical spring associations? Well then you are missing out!

Holi began in India as a celebration of the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu tradition, there once was a demon who began to terrorize the three worlds. Being a typical demonic punk, he threatened the god Vishnu who had earlier destroyed his other demon brother in battle. However, the demon’s son, Prahlad, was despite his demon family tree, a devotee of the good Vishnu. Furious at his rebellious son, the demon asked both his demon sister and his good son Prahlad to sit inside a fire, in order to prove that Vishnu would not protect them. Well, as the story goes, Vishnu stuck by his main man Prahlad, but let the demon sister burn. Holi is the celebration of the burning of the dishonorable sister, and the rescue of the brave son. It is a celebration of life and rejuvenation, which UCB takes part in every year. read more »

PARTYWe’ve all been there. It’s Friday (or Thursday, or Saturday or Sunday) night, and the sun has retired beyond the horizon. Dinner is over, and you’re standing at the threshold of another weekend evening in Berkeley. Do you go out? Do you stay in? There are a lot of potential activities that could determine the trajectory of your night’s path. However, these potential activities all depend on how much residual energy you have from another taxing week at Cal. Lucky for you, we’ve made a handy dandy party scale that you should all pin on your walls and refer to every weekend until the end of time.

Level 1: Sleep (and/or refresh Facebook and Tumblr for a few hours)

Sometimes it happens. Maybe it was a long week, filled with midterms and expert bullshitting tactics. It’s not something we can control. It’s always a good thing to fall asleep at 10 p.m. and to slip into a small coma for 12+ hours. Even if that means passing out in your jeans.

Level 2: Get some take out and watch T.V.

For those nights when you’re not on the verge of death but you’re also not super stoked about leaving your house. You’re already in your pajamas and in bed. Time to have a fat party. Call in some Thai food, crack open a gallon of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and put on some restorative television (“30 Rock” is a great fit). read more »

Juggling and unicycling? Is that juggling and unicycling at the same time? Or a weekend of half a circus tent of ball-flinging and half a tent of back and forth unicycling?

Turns out, it’s more. Oh, so much more. The Berkeley Jugginlg and Unicycle Festival has a full schedule of performances and workshops lined up this Saturday and Sunday, including “Advanced Poi,” “Laughter Yoga,” and “Whip Cracking.” For those of you just looking to brush up on your “Machine/Robot variations with 3 to 5 Balls” or “Eccentric Performing and Juggling”, they’ve got space for you, too.

If you were just looking for a chill weekend off of midterms with a game of unicycle tug-of-war, perhaps a nice, relaxing uni ride through Marc’s Malicious Obstacle Course of Doom, search no further! BJUF happens to host just that! read more »
