Grim news: the first casualties of the California budget crisis are in. About 50 Berkeley school district teachers face the pink slip treatment this upcoming week, and will be out of jobs by June 30.

Around the state, more than 500 teachers and administrators are being let go. The Gubernator says the layoffs will be the sacrifices on the altar of the severely unbalanced budget, where “severely” is synonymous with 16 billion dollars worth of fiscal crisis. Yikes. The Clog knows it’s not easy working in education, but this is just ridiculous.

Actually, when we first read the headline, we thought it meant that some of our fair university’s teaching jobs were in danger. Ha, that’s funny. And here we were dreamily counting off the ones we would fire, if we could….

Not that it matters, since budget crisis translates into higher tuition fees for us, not job cuts for them. Bitter? Who, us? Mais non! What a ridiculous idea.
