Thankfully, we can all scratch “wallow in regret” off of our calendars this weekend; sure-to-be-riveting performances by bands-still-in-their-prime such as Built To Spill, Silversun Pickups, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews Band and, yes, Atmosphere shall not be missed! Our friends at YouTube have yanked the price tag off of the Outside Lands Music Festival in Golden Gate Park and offered a slice of it, real gratis, via the interwebs right here.

However, it looks like if you want to catch the big names (Pearl Jam, Tom Jones, The Black Eyed Peas, TV on the Radio, M.I.A, Modest Mouse) you’re going to have to throw down cash and hop on BART … right now.

YouTube to Broadcast Outside Lands Festival Live [SFist]

Surely all college students can relate on some level to the hobby of spending hours on YouTube, watching fail videos, weird cats, baby animals or nothing in particular.

However, the students of BYU have not had the good fortune to be able to enjoy such pastimes ever since the university banned the site on campus in 2006. But no more. The administration lifted the ban on Friday, citing the increasing number of educational materials available on the site.

Luckily, the students of UC Berkeley have never had to endure such a ban, and the minds of our Utah neighbors can now be infiltrated by cat videos … and educational materials, of course.

Yep, the wise professors of the Professors’ Guide fairly warn you to beware of apathy–because, honestly, how likely are you to keep up with a class you’re not paying your parents’ hard-earned money to take? You’ve got about a snowball’s chance in hell of actually getting anything out of it–unless it’s a subject for which you have (brace yourself … ) genuine interest.

Or, if you’re looking for something a little less useful than a full course, you could just use your summer to catch up on all those famous guest speakers that came to campus. Audio from many of those events is posted on Berkeley’s webcast site, too.

The Chinese government is no stranger to snuffing dissent, and with the largest online community in the world, user-generated websites surface as hotbeds for “quasi-public discussion.” In addition to Tweet suppression, it shut down message boards on over 6,oo0 university related websites that they feared would rouse rabble over the June 3rd and 4th event and blocked off blogs by government critics, like Ai Weiwei.

UC Berkeley’s Berkeley China Internet Project, whose mission is to “to promote the knowledge, culture and social practices of those technologies which will facilitate China’s democratic transition, sustainable development and peaceful emergence in the global community,” observes keenly from across the Pacific. Looks like they’ve got a way to go.

So we were just going to post the video above because we thought it was funny. Then again, we’re not sure if it’s funny for anyone outside of the Daily Cal.

And then we happened on the Cal Wushu video (which we unfortunately cannot embed), and it totally creams our low-quality video. Wushu in itself is already kick-ass, but when you combine martial arts with a tongue-in-cheek action vid, you are made of WIN.
