In light of Crossroads’ recent reintroduction to real silverware and reusable dishes, we felt it might be useful to point out that the DC’s forks are bar-none for making doorstops. Not that we’re condoning theft or anything, but should you ever find yourself with a fork that is of similar malleability to the ones found at Crossroads, you’ll know what to do with it. We’d recommend actually eating with the potato starch compostable cutlery that we’ve come to know and love. It is mighty tasty. The spoons add just a hint of flavor to just about any soup or hot beverage, and the forks make great dessert. That is, if your idea of dessert involves gnawing on semi-edible utensils. Anyway, here goes:

1. Obtain fork. We don’t care how, just, you know, pull a Tim Gunn and “make it work.”

2. Locate door that requires stopping.

3. Bend fork so that it curves just past the head. Make sure it curves with the curve of the prongs. There should be a discernible groove just under the head of the fork where the head meets the now-bent handle.

4. Place fork at the approximate desired position of door. Place the fork face down so that it forms an arch on the floor,* with the prongs away from the hinged side of the door.

5. Open door, sliding the bottom of the door over the head of the fork until it stops on the groove at the base of the handle. Be patient. You may need to readjust the fork, bending the handle more or less depending on the distance of the bottom of the door from the ground. See following image for finished product.


6. Wait. The party will arrive eventually. Congratulate yourself on being resourceful and like, totally DIY.

*Doorstop may not be effective on un-carpeted floors, as prongs will most likely slide on said floor, creating an unbearable, nails-on-chalkboard-like screeching sound. Refraining from use of fork for eating is also advised, once fork is used for doorstop.

A great doorstop indeed. Been using it all year. Well, until it started shaving down the bottom of our door. Then we stopped. But our door was different from many others in that it is unfinished (and unsanded) on the bottom. Maybe that makes a difference.
