People’s Park Needs Patience, TLC

800px-peoples_park_25_years.jpg Many of you Cal students love, loathe or perhaps live in People’s Park. If you feel strongly about the place and have a few years to spare–then now is your chance to contribute to its painstakingly deliberated future!

Drama went down at the People’s Park Advisory Board [1] early this month when five members of the board collectively resigned. In short, the five wanted to get cracking on park improvements by holding a student design contest (because the College of Environmental Design doesn’t have enough of those [2]), while the university–which owns the land–needs to think about that a little bit. What if they don’t want a park anymore? What if they want to build housing? No, not for the homeless people, but for graduate students (who are probably just as poor).

No one knows for sure when People’s Park will actually get a good upgrade. If you want to be a part of any city planning siesta–erm, project–then we suggest you be OK with the unknown, especially when collaborating with the university. Yes, we’re talking to you five.

The advisory board filled a few of their empty spots already, but they want more student perspectives during this very pensive “needs-assessment” phase. Apply if you think you’re in touch with the park’s needs and wants.

Desired qualifications: patience, damn it.

Board members attend approximately 10 meetings per year, held on the first Monday evening of each month in the south campus area, 7:00-9:00 pm. Regular attendance is critical to the Board’s success. Advisory Board members are appointed for one-year terms, renewable to a maximum of three years.

Applications and additional information are available at the People’s Park office (510-642-3255), the UC Office of Community Relations (510-643-5299), and via e-mail to [email protected] Applications will be accepted until February 22, 2008.
