Students support UC Workers in April 2005One thousand two hundred university campus service workers are planning a five-day walkout, and those are just Berkeley’s numbers. The strike-in-planning will take place at University of California campuses statewide.

Golden bears, baby bears, banana slugs and–whatever, all the other guys, too–must unite! Ninety-six percent of our beloved service workers qualify for public aid (e.g. food stamps, child care and housing subsidies).

Now, allow us to follow the yellow-bricked payroll. The University pays its workers, but are not currently opening negotiations. They claim that this will not happen until the state unclogs its backed-up budget processes.

Game point? No, a state-appointed, neutral someone or other pointed out that the UC definitely has the financial means to cough up needed cash with or without our busy, busy Governator.

We wish we could let you in on when this party’s getting started, but that detail is still in the works. With any luck, it’ll happen around the time of AIDS Walk San Francisco–we’ll just walk and walk and then call it a two for one community stunt. We’ll keep you posted–time to show our service workers some love!
