A surprising number of people don’t realize that the Brutalist concrete chunk on Bancroft Way next to Caffe Strada is Berkeley’s own art museum. It doesn’t exactly scream “soothing gallery space,” at least from the outside, which is why we were way excited when we heard that we were getting a new one–designed by “modern-day Japanese luminary [2]” Toyo Ito, no less.

The Center for Japanese Studies (man, those guys are all over the shiznit [3]) hosted Ito, who spoke [4]in Wheeler Hall Auditorium on Saturday evening. He talked about the museum’s design, which he said is intended to make people feel at ease. And we totally believe him. The guy said he’s inspired by pizza, so he can do no wrong in our book.
