BART News: No, Not More Strikes

Thanksgiving weekend’s over and you’re deciding on booking the flight back to Berkeley: do you fly into Oakland International or San Francisco International?

Sure the flight into Oakland’s a bit cheaper, but the three dollars exact change policy and the half hour ride on the AirBART doesn’t seem so enticing wedged between getting off your plane and getting on BART. SFO ftw.

BART decided to make your decision a little harder. The Oakland Airport Connector, a 3.2-mile extension between the Oakland Coliseum Station and the airport, may be completed by 2013. Just in time for you to graduate.

Even with the cost of a one-way ticket at $6, the $520 million construction cost won’t be paid off for a good 20 to 25 years. The rest of the cost will come from bridge tolls, a special Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority sales tax and federal stimulus money (really, stimulus money?)

Mayor Tom Bates isn’t on board with the plan and we have to say, neither are we. Sure the AirBART’s annoying, but if we’re gonna spend six bucks, we’d rather fly SFO anyway.
