We’re so tired of talking about the budget crisis that we won’t even bother to remind you about it. It sucks, California’s circling the drain, yada yada yada.

So what’s the solution? There’s no button to push every 108 minutes, that’s for sure. Some scholars are going for something a little bit simpler: rewriting the state constitution [1]. This Tuesday, Nov. 17th, at Booth Auditorium in Boalt Hall, there will be talk. Specifically, there will be a panel of speakers followed by student questions.

Why something so drastic as rewriting the constitution? Blame Prop 13′s passage. According to the Facebook event page, “districts have been gerrymandered to the point where only extreme liberals and extreme conservatives can get elected, exacerbating the two-thirds problem. It’s a real mess.”

Don’t worry too much about the impending lawlessness of our state, though. Right now it’s on a long list of potential solutions. But if this sets off some kind of firestorm, this issue could be coming to in 2010 to a ballot near you.

And will this be “the solution that could finally fix California?” Well, it’s debatable, but at least we have a forum in which to debate it. From 4:00-6:00 p.m on Tuesday. Don’t be late. A former state assemblyman will be speaking [2].
