The Saga of Josh Wolf, Student Journalist, Continues

j wolfJosh Wolf [1] has had a rough journalistic career to say the least. In 2006 he set the record for being jailed in federal prison [1] longer than any other journalist in U.S. history for protecting source materials (he refused to turn over his video footage of a “protester being choked by a police officer and other officers threatening passers-by with stun guns”). There was also question of whether he was a journalist or just an “activist with a camera.” [2]

In 2007 he announced his candidacy for Mayor [1] of San Francisco, against incumbent Gavin Newsom, promising to wear a video camera everywhere he does his mayoral business. He came in eighth place.

But even after his first run-in with the law, Wolf hasn’t laid low. In fact, he’s now facing a seven-month suspension [2] from UC Berkeley and is being asked to write a 10-page reflection paper due to his involvement in Wheeler Hall when it was occupied back in November.

Though Wolf is a first-year student at the Graduate School of Journalism, he’s being treated as a student instead of a reporter, and his plea of journalistic intent has been trumped by his violation of the student code of conduct. Once again, his journalistic integrity is being challenged by whether or not he qualifies as a journalist.

The same fate awaits the rest of the Wheeler occupants.
